Abstract

ABSTRACT: In order to expand the knowledge of plants that host snail vectors of Fasciola hepatica and facilitate future studies for disease control and prevention in the department  of Caldas, a preliminary register of plant species colonized by Lymnaeidae family snails was conducted in six wetlands located between 2,000 and 3,000 meters above sea  level in the south of the Department. The studied area is associated with livestock farms in the Central Cordillera of Colombia and is recognized as afasciolosisendemic  area. A longitudinal transect of 10 m, where the plants were visited by Lymnaeid snails was established in each wetland. Five species of different snails were identified:  Lymnaea columella (Lymnaeidae) Succinea sp. (Succineidae), Physasp. (Physidae), and Biomphalaria sp. (Planorbidae). The plant species visited by the snails were:  Cuphea racemosa, Galinsoga ciliata, Arenaria lanuginosa, Castilleja communis, Polygonum hydropiperoides, Calceolaria mexicana, Hydrocotyle umbellata, Pennisetum  clandestinum, Eleocharis elegans, Juncus effusus, Nasturtium officinale. However, the most visited species was Nasturtium officinale (55%) which is consistent with the records of other countries and at the same time it allows determining that not only such species can host F. hepatica vectors. These results are a contribution to studies of ecological management of fascioliasis vectors and prevention in the region.
