Abstract

Saguinus leucopus is a neotropical primate endemic of Colombia, in danger of extinction and of which there are few publications in the medical area, which are necessary for its correct clinical management. The objective of this study was to evaluate the values of hemoglobin, creatinine, blood urea nitrogen, ionic calcium, sodium, potassium, chlorine, glucose, total carbon dioxide and anion gap in 31 captive animals of the species S. leucopus using an Electrical Potential Measurement equipment (I-Stat Analyzer - CHEM8 +, Abbott, USA). The values obtained were analyzed using descriptive statistics. The normal distribution of the data was verified using the Shapiro Wilk test and the difference between groups was made using the t-student test for parametric variables and the Mann Whitney test (U test), for the non-parametric variables. Statistical differences were found for hemoglobin and hematocrit values, these being higher in males (hto: 49 ± 3.634; hb: 16.7 ± 1.228) than in females (hto: 44.5 ± 4.523; hb: 15.15 ± 1.55). These differences may be associated with the action of hormones linked to sex in individuals of this species. For the other analysis, no statistical differences were found. This study provides a new tool for the clinical approach of the S. leucopus patient in case of clinical emergencies, in addition to reporting for the first time for the species biochemical parameters such as total carbon dioxide, anionic gap and ionic calcium, which increases the physiological knowledge of the species, finding differences between males and females for hematocrit and hemoglobin values, which had not previously been reported in any species of Callitrichinae.
